What is botox?

We use purified botulinum toxin (commonly known as Botox) to weaken the muscles that cause common facial expressions. It smoothens out existing lines and prevents deeper wrinkles from forming leading to a rejuvenated appearance. It will be tailored to your face and desired outcomes leaving you with a fresher but still natural look

Frequently Asked Questions

On the upper face we use botulinum toxin to reduce forehead and frown lines as well as crows feet.

On the lower face it is used to correct a gummy smile, treat bunny lines, create a ‘lip flip’ or slim the face. We can also use it to create a smoother neck and jawline and even to reduce sweating!

Minimal. The needles used for toxin injections are short and incredibly fine, many don’t feel them at all and others describe them like a brief sting. Breathing techniques or stress balls can be used to help take your mind of it and we have plenty of experience helping those with needle-phobias through it.

On average 3-4 months, some a little shorter or longer. Everyone metabolises the toxin at different rates and there are other variables that affect duration such as area treated, initial dose used, product, adherence to aftercare advice, heat exposure and exercise.

This will depend on what areas you would like to target, how large or strong those muscles are and what the desired outcome is. We will advise on how much will be required and how much this will cost at your consultation.

For your first few treatments it common to need an adjustment 2-4 weeks after the initial treatment (at no extra cost). We believe it is better to go cautiously as we learn how you and your muscles respond to the treatment. It is far preferable to ‘top up’ the effect than having to wait for the effects of over-treatment to wear off.

Botulinum toxin has an excellent safety profile with millions of treatments having been performed worldwide. The are a small number of contraindications to treatment including:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Certain neurological disorders (such as myasthenia gravis)
  • Certain antibiotics and blood-thinning medication
  • Skin infection over or near the area to be treated
  • Previous adverse reaction to botulinum toxin
  • Upcoming surgery

Dr Mathewson will undertake a thorough consultation to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you to have this treatment.

We have chosen to use the Bocouture brand of botulinum toxin as it is the only licensed product with no additional proteins in and therefore has the lowest risk of serious allergic reaction whilst remaining equivalent strength to Botox©. All licensed brands of botulinum toxin are prescription only medications and as such require you to have a face to face consultation with a doctor, dentist or prescribing nurse regardless of who will be performing your treatment. Dr Mathewson performs all consultations and treatments making it more convenient for patients.
