What is microneedling?

Microneedling with our SkinPen medical grade device creates thousands of microchannels in the skin. This stimulates a powerful repair response including an increase in collagen levels by up to 100% per session. Effects include improved skin texture and tone, reduced lines and wrinkles and is ideal for treating acne scars, surgical scars and stretch marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

SkinPen can be used on any area of the body. Commonly treated areas are face, neck and décolletage.

Minimal. We use an effective local anaesthetic cream applied to the area for at least 15 minutes prior to the treatment resulting in a painless treatment. The device itself creates a bit of noise and a buzzing sensation on the skin which most patients tolerate well although you are welcome to bring headphones!

As microneedling results come from a process of injury, inflammation and repair it is important to understand that results take time. We advise that many patients do see some early results within 2-4 weeks with improved hydration and glow but the all important collagen induction takes weeks to months so expect improvement in lines and texture over a longer timeframe. For a course of 3 treatments we review results 1 month after the final treatment.

It is possible to have a single microneedling treatment for skin that is already healthy and hoping to preserve this and ‘collagen bank’. In this instance we would recommend treatments 3-4 times a year.

For mos, however, a course of 3 or more treatments is advised to see visible improvements in lines, scarring, tone and texture, depending on the severity and response to treatments.

Microneedling with the medical grade FDA approved SkinPen device is an incredibly safe treatment. There are a small number of potential contraindications to microneedling including:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Acne infection, inflammation or wounds/sores in the treatment area
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Allergy to stainless steel or local anaesthetic
  • On oral isotretinoin

There is a vast difference between home microneedling equipment and the SkinPen device both in terms of safety and results.

Home microneedling devices such as dermarollers can actually damage your skin barrier as the needles blunt very quickly and the rolling motion can have a drag effect creating tears rather than micro channels in the skin. On top of this maintaining sterility across multiple uses is near impossible so the risk of introducing infection directly into your skin is high.

By contrast SkinPen uses an individual headpiece per treatment with micro needles proven to stay sharp for up to 80 minutes treatment time. This means controlled injury and repair actually supports barrier function whilst powerfully rejuvenating the skin. The SkinPen device has won awards multiple years in a row for its advanced safety, efficacy and results and is one of very few FDA approved microneedling devices available

SkinPen microneedling works by creating microchannels in the skin which stimulate a controlled inflammatory response leading to proliferation of collagen and elastin and natural repair mechanisms. Because of this there needs to be a degree of inflammation so we work towards a target of redness for most indications.

Expect the skin to look and feel red and warm for up to 24 hours. We will provide cooling post-procedure cream and a sterile cooling mask which can be used to relieve these symptoms at home. We strongly recommend avoiding other products including makeup on the treatment area for the first 24 hours so bear this is mind when scheduling your treatment.
